Goodbyes, cupcakes, and braids

Military life can definitely be hard sometimes. One of the hardest parts is that they keep people around just long enough for you to get attached and make friends, then move one of you. Two of my favorite families just moved.

The first was a family in our ward (they're moving to Hawaii). They've been excellent friends and examples to us. They were the first family to invite us to dinner when we moved here and they took care of Macy when Josh was born. Anyway, long story short, we'll definitely miss having them here. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of them.

I made some excellent cupcakes for their "farewell." They're called Spiked Raspberry Lemonade Cupcakes (I didn't spike mine) and I got the recipe from bhg.com if you're interested. I used pureed raspberries (seeds removed) in place of the liqueur.

Greg was baffled by how ridiculous I am, but I decided to make buttermilk for the recipe. I usually just make sour milk with milk and lemon juice or vinegar, but when I was double checking the directions online I saw "Have heavy cream in the fridge? Then you have everything you need to make real buttermilk." And that was that. We had to shake cream for 20 minutes. But when we were done we had fresh buttermilk and butter. It was very exciting. I actually used the butter we made to make the cupcake frosting. And I'll probably never do it again.

I also had to say goodbye to another person who has really taken care of me since we moved here.
She was the OSS Commander's wife (OSS=Operations Support Squadron) and she started what became an excellent spouses' group after her husband was put in charge. It was so nice to be able to go spend a few hours with just women once a month. This picture was taken at the baby shower they threw for me. She's the one in the back center, grey shirt. At her farewell they opened the floor for people to tell stories about Joni. One person after another got up and said what a difference she had made in their lives. She's really an amazing, caring person and I hope that if Greg is ever put in a position like that I will step up and help people as much as she has.

On a much lighter note, I was finally able to braid Macy's hair. Winnie the Pooh did the trick. I didn't do the greatest job ever, especially in the front, but it's definitely cute.

I agree that goodbyes are hard. By the time we left fort bragg almost all of our friends had left. Now we've started over in the friend making process. I'm just hoping that we get better at it and start making good friends faster. In the military you just don't have years to develop friendships.

Also I love Macy's hair!
