I went a little crazy and decided that I need to get involved with the spouse groups that I'm affiliated with here on base. So I sent in my information and was immediately invited to a bunch of cool activities. I went even more crazy and volunteered to be the newsletter editor for one of the groups. I get to find content, write, and design the newsletter once a month. Woo-hoo.
"Coffee" is the military spouse super secret codeword for "dinner." It's just a party where a group of women get together for food and fun without husbands and kids. After dinner we had a quick meeting to get everybody apprised of upcoming events and changes, including people moving in and out. Back in the day they called it a "coffee" because that's what people did, but the name stuck in spite of the event itself changing. They did have coffee with dessert though. But no, I didn't have any (I skipped out on the margarita too).
I have to say that even though I felt more than a little awkward (and very young), I enjoyed myself. It was nice to spend some time with other women sans Macy.
Anyway, at our base in Texas there wasn't a spouse organization (at least that I ever heard about). Fortunately, we still made a great group of friends right away. That didn't happen here. We had been here for three months and had only met one family on base. So there you have it, I took action 'cause I was gettin' a bit stir crazy. And now I'm all sorts of involved.
