More important money tips

DLA (dislocation allowance) is a chunk of money every AF member receives every time they PCS in order to help defray the cost of relocation. If you're single, you don't get DLA for your first move, but you do if you have dependents. In order to receive the money, you have to check the little box that says "DLA" on your travel voucher when you arrive at your new command.

If you didn't do this for your first PCS, go talk to the finance office to find out if you received the DLA. If you didn't, you're still entitled to that money. You DO NOT need to have your orders amended—your dependents are not supposed to be listed on your EAD (extended active duty) orders (your first orders). The 2009 DLA rate for an O-1 with dependents is $1,973.62.

The per diem you should have also received while you were moving includes babies, even if they're under one year old. Make sure that your baby was included on your travel voucher.

Also, check to see if you received FSA (family separation allowance) while your spouse was at ASBC (assuming you didn't go with him). We received BAH for Montgomery, so they assumed I was with Greg. That's another $150-ish (it's $100/month).

You learn new things every day in the military. More to come on TMO.

That's awesome to know. I had no idea about that stuff. Didn't know that there was such a thing as DLA. Now that I'm prepping to move (aka my second move is suppose) I might be allowed some DLA?? Maybe? I'll have to go chat at TMO about this when the time comes.

Thanks for posting this!
