I now understand the terror these birds inflicted on Bodega Bay and its residents. All over this Texas town are the scariest black birds with sharp beaks and yellow eyes. They've creeped me out since we moved here, but today I thought I was going to be killed. Greg, Macy, and I had lunch at a picnic table next to the Concho River, and one of the birds kept picking a fight with the smaller birds right behind us. He puffed up his chest, ruffled his feathers and kept growling. Well, the equivalent of growling in birds.

Finally, the bird moved to the other side of the street and I calmed down. Then, the bird suddenly started flying straight at me! I grabbed Greg's arm and screamed. He says I was also trembling. I don't remember that. (It was more than trembling. I've seen her scared alot, but nothing can compare to this. She was so frantic. Unfortunately, I was unable to see her face because she was turned away, looking at the bird. That would have been priceless!).
Anyway, I just wanted everyone to know that I was nearly dive-bombed. After this nearly fatal experience, I have much greater respect for birds.

sorry about the bird. i think birds are fine and lovely until they get too close. then, all of the sudden, they may as well be pterodactyls with vampire teeth.
Greatly enjoyed your bird commentary. I can visualize the panic that disturbed your picnic reverie. And, having been the recipient of many of Greg's insensitive mockings, I can sympathize with how he must have teased you afterward. (Somehow I don't see you as an avid aviculturist anytime soon!)
